CreamOfVeggies produces high-fat cream-type "craems" for vegetarians and vegans

Image
Startup No 180 - StartupRealities 2020 series CreamOfVeggies produces high-fat cream-type products made of plants only, which are suitable for vegetarians and vegans and are used especially for adding to hot drinks: coffee and tea. The company's range includes almond cream, oat cream, soya cream and rice cream. To meet EU food labelling rules that require the presence of cow's milk in cream, the company uses the neologism #craem to describe and brand its products: #AlmondCraem, #OatCraem, #SoyaCraem, #RiceCraem.  CEO QUOTE "When people order a latte with a plant-based milk substitute, many are disappointed with the plain taste. This is mostly because the fat content in the milk substitutes is lower, compared with cow's milk. We square this circle with our high-fat craems: a 10% fat almond craem will never taste plain to anyone ever again." - said CreamOfVeggies founder and CEO Creda Vegerano. VeggieSilk releases silkworms live while harvesting silk cocoons

Image
StartupRealities No 155 VeggieSilk is a fair-trade silk producer which has developed technology to release silkworms intact from their silk cocoons in the silk production process. The fact that the silkworm is not killed in the process of harvesting the silk fibres makes the silk suitable for vegans and ethical consumers. The traditional silk production process requires boiling the silk cocoons to kill the pupae inside before they start gnawing their way out through the cocoon and damaging the fibres. VeggieSilk uses ultrasound sonar to establish the ripeness of the cocoons and splits each cocoon open along the direction of the fibres, so that the fibre is not damaged when the silkworm is released.  CEO QUOTE " Our patented micro-robotic technology slits each cocoon open and releases the prisoner inside. Technically, we perform a Caesarian section for the silkworm in every cocoon we harvest. We then set the insects free through a hole in the wall. We call that hole The Shaw...

Humamole produces patented hummus-guacamole spread

Image
StartupRealities No 106 Humamole is a food company that has developed and patented a new spread composed of 50% hummus and 50% guacamole. The Humamole spread is heavier in texture and lighter in colour than guacamole, which appeals to vegan, vegetarian and health-conscious buyers. The key ingredients, chickpeas and avocado, account for 98% of the recipe; a selection of flavours account for the remaining 2%. Normally hummus requires adding olive oil but the high oil content of avocado makes any addition of oil unnecessary. CEO QUOTE "You know when you put 2 and 2 together and you get something exceptionally good. This is when the cronut was invented: croissant and donut. And now we have the #humamole, pronouced who-moo-mole-ley. While some people have guac at breakfast and hummus at dinner, humumole is good for 'brinner': both breakfast and dinner," explained Humamole founder and CEO Humbert Molais.
