NoiseRevenge uses laser beams to transmit sound to exact locations

Image
StartupRealities No 157 NoiseRevenge is a sound technology company which produces patented sound transmission devices that beam sound with a laser beam to an exact location. This allows users to utilise the device to punish inconsiderate neighbours who play loud music. The advantage of the NoiseRevenge technology is that the sound is delivered and released at a chosen location, rather than being heard in the entire space from source to destination in the normal way that sound waves spread. TECHNOLOGY NoiseRevenge uses the photoacoustic effect : when water vapour present in the air absorbs light from a laser beam, it forms sound waves. The quality of the sound is not particularly high but can still be encoded sufficiently to differentiate it from noise. A unique part of this technology is that the sound will only be heard at a given distance from the transmitter. CEO QUOTE "We bring civilisation to neighbourly relations with our new sound technology. There is no longer a ne...

OneIPodPerChild gives children in poor countries MP3 player with science talks

Image
StartupRealities No 95 OneIPodPerChild is an international education foundation that gives children in developing countries a solar-powered MP3 player with pre-uploaded science and education talks in the local language. CEO QUOTE "We try to spark an interest in science and technology in children. The 5.0 GB memory of the MP3 player can store 200 hours of audio podcasts on a variety of interesting topics. And if a child finishes the first batch of 200 hours, they can download another 200, and then another, from the local school teacher. We provide teachers with a library of several thousand hours of podcasts," said company founder and CEO Ona Chiltern. One Laptop Per Child image from Nepal (source: Wikipedia )

SpaceBonanza searches for alien civilisations to commercialise their technology

StartupRealities No 17 SpaceBonanza Limited is a moonshot-project company that searches for extraterrestrial (ET) civilisations in space with the goal of adopting their novel technology and commercialising ET intellectual property on Earth. The company finances the deployment of powerful telescopes to search for intelligent life beyond Earth and transmit encoded messages, with the expectation that it will have the first-mover advantage when contact with aliens is eventually established. SCIENCE The company focuses on exploring the habitable zone of nearby stars, i.e. the region in star systems with planets close enough to their star to sustain liquid water on the planet surface. SpaceBonanza transmits encoded messages to the nearby stars with science questions such as "How can you achieve time travel?" and "How do you utilise quantum entanglement?" TIMELINE Investors are bankrolling the company for a period of 35 years as SpaceBonanza is not expected to gene...
