HomeConstitution provides subscription service for adjudicating in household disputes

StartupRealities No 111

HomeConstitution is a subscription service that arbitrates and adjudicates on family issues and helps discipline children, rein in parents and iron out household conflicts. All members of a household (parents and children alike) are required to sign up to a set of pre-agreed rules, known as the #HomeConstitution, and to abide by the ruling of a panel of volunteer judges when their intervention is requested.

LEGAL PROCESS
To help draft the rules, templates of common rules are provided, e.g. "Mama Bear will give Baby Boo Boo a monthly pocket money allowance that cannot be spent on sweets"; or "Boo Boo will write his homework every day". Once agreed by all household members, these rules are framed and shipped to display on the wall as the family's HomeConstitution. In case of conflict, children or parents can request a hearing and adjudication by a panel of three lay judges. The plaintiff and the defendant select one judge each, while the third judge is selected at random among a pool of volunteers. Submission of cases is done in a standard format that includes a 1-min video testimonial by each side and a template of several filled in blanks. The judges vote by common majority.

SUBSCRIPTION MODEL & SERVICE FEES
1) The annual subscription costs USD 209.99 (or payable monthly at $19.99 per month) and includes framing and shipping of the HomeConstitution and one submission for adjudication per month.
2) Amendments to the Home Constitution carry a charge of USD 39.99, including framing and shipping.
3) Additional conflict resolution submissions can be purchased at USD 15.99 per case for the next five monthly cases and USD 12.99 per submission beyond that within the month.
4) Each judge earns a credit of USD 1.0 towards their own annual subscription for each reviewed case. All adult subscribers to the service can be judges and their performance is evaluated for fairness and professionalism.
5) Appealing a ruling commands a fee of USD 199.99 and is reviewed by professional legal experts.

CEO QUOTES
"At the operational level, there are three common mistakes that people make and here is how to avoid them:
1) Don't sweep your household issues under the carpet: give them to our judges and they'll help you solve the underlying problem objectively and fairly.
2) Don't set too many rules in the HomeConstitution. A dozen articles trump a hundred articles.
3) Don't appoint a friend or neighbour as a judge in your submission for adjudication. This is risky as you don't want to expose your circle of contacts to your family drama, even if you think they will take your side. Better pick strangers who fit your requirements, e.g. a law student or graduate for added confidence.

Remember: it is a great idea to help others by volunteering as a judge. Why not be Judge Judy and poke your nose into other people's family life?

In the grand scheme of things, HomeConstitution rightly deserves the Nobel Peace Prize: one little truce for a family, one giant leap for humanity," said HomeConstitution founder and CEO Homer Constable.
